“Becoming a phenomenon”

This project is a visual exploration of intra-actions, a concept by physicist Karen Barad that transcends traditional understandings of relationships. Unlike “interactions,” where pre-existing entities act upon each other, intra-actions simply mean that entities (e.g., objects, subjects, materials, technologies) co-create and are constituted by each other; they are formed precisely through their mutual engagement. The boundaries between them are not fixed but emerge as an effect of a continuous process of “becoming-with.” The work demonstrates how everything is mutually transformative and interdependent, challenging the assumption of separate existences.

The theme of intra-actions is told through photographs of the microscopic world. Enlarged and transformed cell images, processed and augmented using artificial intelligence and artistic intervention, represent a complex network of intra-actions. Here, elementary biological data, AI algorithms, and artistic creativity are not viewed as separate components but as a dynamic whole that mutually constitutes itself, leading to the emergence of new visual forms.

The series is also complemented by versions of the original, un-enlarged images to demonstrate the diversity of ways in which individual photographs and captured cells exist. These were observed under various microscope magnifications in organ preparations, such as skin, brain, or spleen, and differentiated using either stains that distinguish individual cells or stains that highlight specific parts of cells.

The entire work does not just point to how things influence each other, but especially how everything shapes itself in a continuous process of “becoming-with” or “co-creation.” The individual photographs bear witness to the fluid boundaries between subject and object, nature and technology, and process and result, all continuously constructed within deep and dynamic intra-actions. The work thus visually develops the idea that reality is constantly being reshaped, and meaning and form emerge from the inherent interconnectedness of everything around us.
