Dedicated
to my family,
and above all to Václav Rusek.
Doc. RNDr. PhMr. Václav Rusek, CSc., was a Czech university lecturer and a specialist in the history of pharmacy. He devoted his life to pharmacy and to the preservation of Baroque pharmacies. From 1972, he was involved in the establishment and further development of the Czech Pharmaceutical Museum, which was officially opened between 1994 and 1996 in the Baroque hospital in Kuks. He was the author of 64 original works and dozens of professional articles. Beyond his field, he also took an interest in graphic design and bookplates.
Based on this personal and family history, I created a set of two rings. One serves as a commemorative piece, the other as a wearable ring intended to be passed down. Both rings are connected by a garnet, symbolizing the pomegranate — the emblem of the Brothers Hospitallers, founders of the hospital in Kuks, and a motif present at the very heart of the Baroque pharmacy.
The rings function as a reminder of family history and as a symbolic closing of a long-standing connection to this field.
The signet ring features a seal with a coat of arms and the initials VR. The heraldic motif refers to the traditional design of signet rings as well as to the frequent decorative elements found on the jars of Baroque pharmacies. The typeface used closely resembles the lettering seen on these historic vessels.
