The interactive mobile app Beyond the Mask was created as a concept for an upcoming exhibition at the Museum of the Wallachian Region. Its goal is to introduce visitors to the richness of Wallachian traditions through the form of a digital game.
Using the mobile app, users begin four symbolic journeys inspired by traditional carnival characters and their associated themes — the Bear (strength, family, prosperity), the Horse (labor, effort, everyday life), the Jester (joy, celebration, laughter), and Death (rituals, loss, and new beginnings). Each character represents one aspect of life in the Wallachian region and reveals historical customs and traditions such as weddings, carnival festivities, pastoral life, or folk costumes.
Each path consists of tasks adapted to the user’s age — different content is offered for children and adults. Users can choose between two types of challenges: “Complete the task” or “Reflect and respond.” Every decision and completed challenge is recorded in a personal digital journal. Those who complete all four journeys are rewarded with a unique AI-generated mask — a collectible digital card that reflects their personal path through the app.
Carnival masks are not just costumes — they can be mirrors of our emotions, archetypes, and inner stories. This project blends gamification, education, and self-exploration in a format that speaks to modern visitors while remaining true to the spirit of Wallachian heritage.
