Molten glass sculpture/candlestick
Holy Grail. The main object and attribute of the religious community of the Grail Movement according to Ernst Bernhard. The society I grew up in. A movement that is considered a sect, where I still consider this appellation pejorative and do not wish to be critical of it in my work, but neither do I wish to glorify it, as I no longer consider myself a member of this movement. It’s a long way off for an undergraduate thesis, but this object was created as part of a term paper. An object that we keep on our table during times of celebration. This object representing the flow of divine energy from the Grail Castle, here on Earth, if we open ourselves up enough to it. An object symbolizing this reception. Surrounded by seven candles.
And so I’ve conceived of it in my own way, the chalice in the middle, the candles around the perimeter. The organic and fluid nature of the object comes from my relationship with my faith and this community. I still don’t know how to grasp it, and it’s something that’s always changing and evolving. At the same time, I feel that I am not only opening up my drawers with this treatment of the subject, but I am also disrupting a kind of home and household by broaching this subject with my mother, as a full and faithful member.
