Optical illusions in design
In my semester project focused on optical illusion in design, I explore the imitation of natural materials and the disruption of trust in visual perception. My inspiration comes from the imitation of wood, which is reflected in the shoe sole and the handle of a handbag. At first glance, these elements appear natural; however, they are in fact resin casts.
The project is unified by the motif of fog, obscurity, and the moment when the fog begins to fade — AFTERMIST. This transition symbolizes the point at which the viewer gradually starts to recognize the true structure of the object and becomes aware of the optical illusion. Fog functions not only as a visual atmosphere but also as a metaphor for the ambiguity between reality and illusion.
Fur plays a significant role in both products, as its soft and gentle character evokes the same fragility and impermanence as fog. To visually ground the composition, I chose black glossy leather, which emphasizes the form of the objects and brings a sense of stability and weight.
Another intentionally misleading element is the unconventional placement of lacing on the inner side of the shoe and a tongue emerging from the side panel, which disrupt the expected construction and further deepen the theme of optical illusion and viewer disorientation.
