As part of the redesign proposal for the Kvočna Kindergarten in Zlín, I focused on the complete transformation of its three main classrooms: the Sunny, Rainy, and Rainbow Rooms. The goal of this project was to create an environment that is not only aesthetically pleasing for children but also functional, stimulating, and safe.
The core concept of the design was the color-based identification of each classroom according to its name, the use of pastel tones, improvement of ergonomics, accessibility of equipment for children, and support for their independence and creativity.
An important aspect of the redesign was the replacement of furniture. The new equipment was carefully selected with regard to children’s autonomy and ease of use. Pastel colors were applied not only to the walls but also incorporated into interior details. Each classroom features wallpaper with subtle patterns that correspond to the room’s theme, helping to create a pleasant and inspiring atmosphere.
The kitchenette area was also modified to ensure that cleaning supplies and tools are not visually accessible to children and do not cause distractions. This was achieved through the use of lockable cabinets and improved space organization.
Minor changes were also made to the office area, including the addition of built-in storage solutions.
Each classroom was newly divided into thematic ateliers – including art, music, construction, reading, and dramatic play corners. This system allows children greater freedom in choosing their activities and supports their individual interests and talents. The ateliers are visually separated yet remain part of an open-plan space, encouraging interaction among children and flexible use of the environment.
The redesign of the three classrooms at Kvočna Kindergarten emphasizes functionality, accessibility, and aesthetics. Each design decision was made with regard to the physical, psychological, and developmental needs of preschool-aged children. By creating color-coded, inspiring, and practical spaces, we aim to support children’s independence, creativity, and sense of security.
