The designer’s glass sugar bowl is based on the Czech invention of sugar cubes and transforms this symbol associated with dining into the contemporary form of an art object. The sugar bowl is created using the fused sculpture technique and consists of a lower part and a lid. The inner cavity of the sugar bowl resembles layered sugar cubes. After connecting the two parts, a geometric formation resembling a crystal is created through the clear glass.
The object connects the tradition of Czech glassmaking with the playfulness of building from cubes and refers to the purity, openness and hospitality associated with dining. The symbol of the sugar cube functions here as an unobtrusive cultural reference to the Czech invention and the everyday ritual of sharing at the table.
