A short cinematic mapping the tragic journey of Charles Dexter Ward is the logical culmination of my work over the past few years in the studio, and also a confirmation of my inevitable shift towards the creation of 3D environments and their fusion with immersive storytelling and compelling narrative themes.
The connection between storytelling and full CG environments was the main focus of my work, with the creative aspect being closely intertwined with the improvement of my technical knowledge and skills. This allowed me to push the boundaries of what I was previously capable of creating, and to increase the level of detail and realism.
The video itself, through its imagery and editing, evokes a semi-abstract nightmare, capturing the protagonist as he writes his final letter just before committing suicide—a consequence of the unspeakable horror and visions he experienced during an expedition to the remote Canadian North.
The pursuit of realism blends with a slightly exaggerated stylization, especially in terms of camera effects and imperfections. The image itself often appears very blurry and gritty, which enhances the sense of despair and uncertainty…
