This bachelor thesis presents an innovative concept of military footwear with a vision to perceive footwear not as a tool of war, but as a crucial means of passive protection for the user. The work directly responds to the fact that the universal model of military footwear no longer meets the demands of modern armed forces in today’s operational environment, and therefore defines specialized gear that directly influences the mobility, physical performance, and long-term operational capability of a soldier in crisis areas.
The practical part of the thesis consists of the original design and realization of three prototypes of specialized military footwear, with each pair intended for a specific and climatically diametrically opposed environment. The first of these is desert footwear designed for dry, hot climates and sandy or rocky terrain, with a primary emphasis on protection during airborne drops. The second type is tropical footwear constructed for the extreme humidity of the jungle, where it ensures rapid water drainage and stability in waterlogged terrain. The third model represents arctic footwear developed for extreme sub-zero temperatures, where high demands were placed on thermal insulation, protection against frostbite, and safe movement on snow and ice.
The designed prototypes comprehensively take into account the demands for functionality, ergonomics, real technological feasibility, and the contemporary aesthetic concept of military gear. This comprehensive design concept of specialized footwear precisely reflects the differing physical properties of materials required for individual climatic extremes. In addition to the primary military purpose, these construction principles have a wide potential for use outside the military sector as well, particularly in the field of professional outdoor footwear, emergency services, the integrated rescue system, or within expedition equipment. The resulting models represent a functional foundation intended for deployment and testing in real combat and stress conditions.

The desert model is designed with a primary emphasis on maximum safety during tactical operations, as demonstrated by specific protection during airborne drops from an aircraft, ensuring extreme fixation of the ankle joint to eliminate injury upon impact. Safety is further enhanced by closed components and smooth elements without hooks that prevent the catching of parachute cords, an integrated ankle protector (Ankle Protector), and internal Kevlar protection increasing overall mechanical resistance. To maintain high breathability in hot climates, an area of Cordura® material is applied to the sides and tongue of the footwear to ensure optimal ventilation, while the unique cut of the tongue combines two construction methods for maximum comfort and absolute tightness against the penetration of sand. The lightweight construction of the lower part, together with a carbon fiber insole insert that facilitates movement and effectively returns energy into the rebound, is fully optimized for swift and dynamic movement in challenging terrain. In terms of functional features, the boot possesses puncture protection in the sole, antistatic properties, and a practical lace stopper with a connecting pocket for rapid tightening and safe storage of the lace ends. A distinct innovative feature is the integrated modular system, which allows for the direct attachment of a backup weapon or a small tactical pouch directly onto the footwear.

The tropical model is engineered for extreme humidity and challenging conditions, where, thanks to its unlined construction and a special combination of materials, it ensures exceptionally fast drying and efficient moisture drainage from the inside of the boot. A high level of hygiene and prevention against odor or fungi in constant dampness is guaranteed by the upper leather with an integrated antibacterial treatment, complemented by easily washable insoles for quick maintenance in the field. The lower part of the footwear is fitted with a highly durable Vibram sole featuring a prominent, deep tread designed for deep mud, which possesses a self-cleaning system for the continuous expelling of debris during walking. For tactical operations, the boot is equipped with an integrated Rope Sliding system in the sole for safe repelling and a Kevlar safety layer that provides 100% protection against punctures. Overall durability is enhanced by the flame-retardant properties of the entire construction, achieved through the strict use of components and threads made of Nomex material. The practical features consist of a lace stopper for lightning-fast tightening and an integrated lace pocket that prevents them from unintentionally untying or catching on vegetation. A significant innovative detail is the upper protective mesh, which reliably prevents the penetration of debris, insects, or other hazards into the interior of the boot, both during active use and when the boot is removed and drying freely.

This model is specially designed for operations in extreme sub-zero temperatures and on icy surfaces, where its foundation is formed by a high-end Vibram® Ice Trek / Arctic Grip sole ensuring maximum grip on wet ice, which is additionally fitted with integrated steel spikes for movement in the most demanding terrain. Absolute impermeability to moisture from the outside is guaranteed by a waterproof vacuumed construction, while the loss of body heat into the cold ground is effectively prevented by an innovative air barrier integrated directly into the midsole. The internal thermal insulation system relies on the use of pure natural wool, which retains excellent insulating properties even when damp, and is complemented by a removable inner fleece bootie, which significantly increases thermal comfort and allows for easy drying in field conditions. The upper layers of the footwear are lined with Polartec® material for maximum warmth and finished with an upper snow collar in the form of a cuff, which reliably prevents snow from falling into the interior of the boot. In terms of tactical and mechanical functionality, the boot features an integrated structural system for stable and rapid attachment of snowshoes, and its fastening is protected by a special lock against opening, which ensures that the zipper does not loosen on its own under demanding stress conditions.
