The goal of the project is to transform the existing theater snack bar, foyer, and lower-level bar at the Zlín City Theater into an open, welcoming, and atmospheric space that will meet the current needs of visitors while respecting the building’s unique character. The design seeks to sensitively interweave historical values with new layers of the interior, creating a natural dialogue between the past and the present.
Light serves as the central motif of the design. It is not perceived merely as a technical means of providing illumination, but as a fundamental compositional and formative element. Light permeates every part of the interior, guiding visitors through the individual spaces, aiding orientation, and creating a changing atmosphere that responds to the rhythm of theater operations. It highlights materials, reveals their structure, and helps shape the identity of the entire space.
An important part of the concept is the preservation of the original wooden paneling, which is seen as a repository of the place’s memory and a reminder of the theater building’s history. New interventions build upon this through soft upholstered elements, glass block walls, and vertical structures that bring lightness, rhythm, and spatial dynamism to the interior. The result is an environment that respects its cultural heritage without sacrificing contemporary expression.
The result is a space that transcends its original function. It becomes a place for meeting, relaxation, and sharing—a space where the theatrical experience does not end when the curtain falls, but continues in conversations, moments of reflection, and time spent together. The foyer is thus transformed into a lively social space that bridges the world of the stage with everyday life.
