The thesis focuses on the transformation of abandoned and unconventional spaces into independent cultural centers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It examines the role of art and individual initiative in revitalizing urban environments. Through in-depth interviews with cultural center organizers, it analyzes the motivations, challenges, and strategies behind the creation and sustainability of these spaces, particularly brownfields.
In the practical part, the author maps specific examples such as Tabačka Kulturfabrik, Bašta, NERV, and Petrohradská kolektiv. She explores how these spaces operate, their impact on the community, and the challenges they face. The outcome includes an original exhibition project in Zlín, which connects acquired insights with practice and demonstrates the potential of artistic intervention as a tool for fostering social cohesion and public discourse.

The idea for the exhibition SPACE IS THE CASE emerged from the reflection that without space, there can be no participation. Without a physical place, we cannot gather, share, or create culture together. When the opportunity arose to use an old factory building in Zlín, we decided to transform it into an exhibition space. We curated the work of artist Kasha Potrohosh, whose pieces reflect her personal experience of the war in Ukraine.
