Consuma (less is more)

For the theme of the project “Less is More” I created the figure of a “consumer monster” – a creature that personifies our unhealthy obsession with trends and our unquenchable hunger for shopping. My monster bears the name Consuma, which refers to the very concept of “consumerism”. It’s actually a kind of digital sales boss that insidiously lures people to more and more “needs” – and simply devours those who succumb.

I was inspired by characters like Gollum from Lord of the Rings or Dobby from Harry Potter. But unlike these well-known film characters, Consuma is a woman. Why? Because a woman often symbolizes temptation – and I also think that we find most of these sirens of modern consumerism on social media.

Consuma is enthroned on a pile of trends that is both her literal throne and a trap for her victims. This pile consists of fashion pieces, iconic branded products and other ‘necessities’ that are dictated by social media. As an absolute symbol of consumerism, the McDonald’s package is placed at the top of this pile.

Consuma is thus a mixture of irony and criticism. A warning that less is not only more, but sometimes vital.

I started my work by editing a female figure in Da 3d. The extensions were quite limited, so I created at least a base there and posed the figure. I then moved it into Blender, where I did some more texture editing and sculpting to deform the monster figure.
