This work is focused on the design of a bar stool for the U16 building in the Spatial Design studio. During the process of designing, I knew that I didn’t want to create just an ordinary piece of furniture, but an object that would also carry a certain idea and visual story.
The bar stool is based on a simple geometric metal structure. I’ve chosen metal primarily because of its fire resistance and its clean, modern look. It perfectly points out the sharp edges and minimalist surfaces that look technical and elegant.

The most important element of the entire chair is the pattern on its surface. It is based on a simplified map of the city of Zlín from 1910. I’ve chosen this motif because the stool is to be located in Zlín, which has a strong architectural and industrial history and its urban development is very specific. The map here does not only function as a decoration, but also as a symbol of the connection between the past and modern design. The lines picturing the streets create an organic network that contrasts with the simple construction of the chair and gives the object originality and a deeper meaning.
The work with light also plays another important role. The white lines of the map on the dark metal surface create a strong contrast and when illuminated, the spatiality and graphic character of the object are emphasized. So the bar stool appears not only as furniture, but almost as an art installation.
