The chest ornament with a bronze spider-shaped clasp was created in response to the theme “Contemporary Jewellery Inspired by the Great Moravian Period.”
The form of the piece is based on Great Moravian belt buckles from the 7th–9th centuries, which functioned through a fastening system in which a stylized bird’s beak hooked into an eyelet. This method of connection became the central motif of the entire object.
In Great Moravia, belts symbolized power, social status, and strength, primarily associated with weapons and dominance. This work, however, shifts the symbol of power from the male waist to the female chest, opening space for different forms of strength — care, relationships, responsibility, and the ability to sustain life.
The spider-shaped clasp symbolizes a creature that, through the patient construction of its web, creates a space for connection and existence. It becomes a metaphor for care, relationships, and the invisible bonds that hold society together, even though they are often less visible than traditional symbols of power.
