One of my favourite artistic movements is the Russian avant-garde. The artists of that time were reacting to how fast the world was changing, and they themselves were one of the causes of those changes. They were inventing new artistic directions, techniques and materials. I wanted to feel the avant-garde on myself and create something out of the ordinary, something you don’t often see in the art world. That’s why I chose… shoes. I took as my basis the tower of the Third International, designed by Vladimir Tatlin in 1919. It’s a combination of two inclined metal spirals, and buildings placed one above the other, geometrically different shapes, but which relate to each other harmoniously. I wanted to connect this construction with the shoes and make it an art object. Although they would probably be impossible to walk in, they would be an interesting piece in an exhibition of early 20th century Russian art.
