Le Corbusier, Bauhaus

One of the assignments for the summer term was to work with a style or art direction that was created before the advent of modern technology (computers). The aim of the assignment was to discover different principles of how the thought tendencies of the style we chose can be expressed in the 21st century. Le Corbusier pioneered European Modernism in architecture and laid the foundations for what became the Bauhaus movement in Germany and the International Style in the USA.

In this assignment I wanted to try transforming the surrounding environment through the Stable Diffusion program. The connection between Le Corbusier and the city of Zlín became a great bridge in the idea. I dug deeper into how this personality is connected to the city, and the big, if not pleasant, surprise was discovering that Le Corbusier loved Zlín’s architecture. It basically fulfilled his ideas and visions to the point. Functionalist buildings that fulfilled their social purpose. The brick (Le Corbusier’s favourite shape) is the foundation. In 1935 he became a juror in a competition to come up with a new type of residential buildings in Zlín. In this period, besides entering his design, he also proposed another urban design. He was involved in the planning of, for example, the South Slopes in Zlín (which were to extend to part of Otrokovice, including a bridge). Unfortunately, none of his visions and ideas came to fruition, probably due to financial constraints.

Therefore, I decided to create a model through artificial intelligence that would implement Le Corbusier’s tendencies into the architecture of Zlín. Created in Stable Diffusion with Inpaint and Img2img.
