Bar stool

Bar Stool Design

Modularity was the key principle I chose during the design process, as the assignment was intended primarily for the spaces of the Spatial Design Studio, while also considering possible use in other locations.

The inspiration comes from the silhouette of a person sitting on a bar stool, specifically the angles of the knees, which are mirrored by the rear legs of the stool.

By adjusting the telescopic system below the seat, the backrest can be positioned at 3 different heights or removed entirely. This creates 4 possible versions of the bar stool that can be easily changed.

Though I faced a problem when incorporating the removable backrest – in the version where the backrest is removed, the tube system that serves as the backrest anchoring in the other versions began to obstruct the rear part of the seat.

I solved this problem by changing the circular seat into a slight ellipse with an eccentric axis. The result is a seat that can be rotated eccentrically by 180°, allowing the system that is sticking out to be concealed in the version with the backrest removed and thus covering the unwanted element.

The solid metal structure complements the deep and soft seat, which together with the backrest creates the comfort of the stool.

During the design process, I also took into consideration ease of manufacturing, which does not require any special technologies or production methods.

The outcome of the closure project is a model of a stool that represents the colour, form, and function of its final intended design.
