The candle extinguisher was created for the inter-studio assigned theme Roots. The extinguisher consists of a glass bell, a stainless steel top and handle, and a walnut wood body.
The candle extinguisher is inspired by the classic Czech holiday Hromnice. The object is directly inspired by the traditions associated with this holiday, however, it is not just an exact imitation of these traditions, but a revival of them in a new visual and material context.
The extinguisher draws from the tradition of lighting, i.e. hromnicky, which protected people from storms and lightning. Therefore, this meaning is also transferred to the extinguisher. When extinguishing a candle with this object, the flame is calmly smothered. It symbolizes peace that will not be disturbed by dangerous and sudden storms. When extinguished, smoke also collects in the glass bell, this collected smoke resembles storm clouds gathering for a storm. The extinguisher thus creates a new “ritual” that connects with the traditions of our ancestors.
