Baťa’s Chess: Architectural Icons

The Baťa Chess set presents a new interpretation of the classic game, inspired by the gems of functionalist architecture. Each piece is represented by a specific building that defined the visual identity of 20th-century modern cities. The entire set was produced using 3D printing technology.

Beyond Zlín: While the inspiration is primarily drawn from Zlín, the project reflects a broader context. Baťa’s architecture—represented by standardized houses and department stores—became a global phenomenon that can be found worldwide, from Europe to India.

King and Queen: The most important pieces in the set represent Zlín’s landmarks. The King is embodied by Building 21 (the Baťa Skyscraper), a symbol of efficiency and power. The Queen is represented by Hotel Moskva (now Hotel Zlín).

Bishop and Knight: The Bishop is based on the modern lines of the Shoe House, a structure replicated in many cities. The Knight is inspired by the dynamic form of the Grand Cinema, which at the time was the largest cinema in Central Europe.

Rook and Pawn: The Rook represents the monolithic Baťa Department Store. The Pawn, as the basic unit of the game, is inspired by the standardized Baťa house—the fundamental building block of Baťa’s satellite towns globally.
